Westside Elementary teachers are hosting a yard and bake sale
Saturday May 3 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., for student Hunter Kyle who
was burned in a fire. He is in the pediatric ICU at the Children's
Hospital for the King's Daughters. All proceeds will go to the
family's medical expenses. All left-over items will be donated
to CHKD.
Yard sale, BBQ

Living composers
CREO, the Old Dominion University Contemporary Music Ensemble
will perform "The Music of Living Composers" for the
Spring Concert at Historic St. Luke's Church, Sunday, May 4,
2 p.m. at Historic St. Luke's Church in Smithfield. Dr. Andrey
Kasparov, internationally renowned musician, will direct the
performance of the ensemble. The ensemble's repertoire consists
mainly of works composed after 1945 as well as earlier 20th-century
compositions. This concert will feature the works of Alan Blank,
a Richmond, Virginia composer and VCU emeritus; Tsippi Fleisher,
a composer from Israel; Joseph White, a composer on the CNU faculty;
and Isidora Zebelian, a Serbian composer. For more information

TRIAD conference
The Isle of Wight County S.A.L.T. Council is hosting its 9th
annual TRIAD Conference at the Smithfield Center Monday, May
5, with the theme, "Protecting Yourself at Home and Abroad."

Sheriff's Institute
Isle of Wight County Sheriff C. W. Phelps invites residents to
become associate members of the Virginia Sheriffs' Institute.
A mailing is going out this week with information on the program.
Individual memberships are $20 and businesses are $40. Funding
provides technical resources and training for law enforcement,
as well as providing scholarship funding for Isle of Wight County

Lizzie Simon, author of "Detour: My Bipolar Road Trip in
4-D," will speak at NAMI Western Tidewater's annual dinner
Tuesday, May 13, 6 p.m. at the PDCC Workforce Development Center
in Franklin. Entitled "What bipolar people want their friends
and family to know," Simon's talk focuses on her own experiences

The Isle of Wight County Parks and Recreation Department is registering
participants for a three day/two night trip, Oct. 4-6 to Washington,
D.C. The trip includes two nights in Washington, D.C., a guided
tour a memorial tour, Capitol Hill, the Smithsonian and more.
The cost is $275 for a double, $355 for a single and $255 for
