A North Carolina consulting firm had lots of ideas for revitalizing downtown Smithfield — but someone needs to lead the project.
That was the conclusion after an hour-long public presentation last night by Sanford Holshouser, who was hired by Isle of Wight County to take a close look at Main Street after several stores have gone vacant.
“We want to see if there’s a level of support for this, if not, throw it out,” said Mark Hall, who owns 319 Main Street, and where tourism and the Arts League are located.
The study cost $15,000, and was paid for by Isle of Wight County.
The report targeted specific types of businesses — especially retail and restaurants — that would draw locals as well as tourists to downtown.
Some ideas included a bookstore, specialty foods store, wellness center, sidewalk dining and a pub.
