The most recent snow was wet, heavy and perfect for building snowmen. This creation was one of many built along Cary Street in Smithfield last week following the second significant snowfall this year. More snow is forecast for Thursday.

County officials are backing off the claim that staff created the ISLE2040 to address the cost of the Norfolk water deal.

ISLE2040, which Supervisor Al Casteen called “a moving target” during a joint meeting with Smithfield officials, is a growth plan to increase population density in the Newport Development Service District (DSD).

The hope is that upping the density will accommodate the projected 27,000 residents that county staff say will be coming to the county in the next 25 years and preserve the county's rural heritage while concentrating growth in the Carrollton area.

Long-range forecast: June is coming

It’s 16 days until spring, but we have our doubts. However, the long term forecast is definite about the arrival of June.

Most people claim to “be over it,” but it’s not over. More snow is forecast for Thursday, along with colder-than-average temperatures.

For more than two weeks, residents have coped with disrupted schedules, icy roads, cold houses, closed businesses and schools, and for some, busted pipes and broken furnaces as temperatures fell to below 10 degrees, followed by 6-7 inches of snow.

Reynolds pleads guilty

Former Windsor Police Chief Arlis “Vic” Reynolds showed remorse as he pleaded guilty Monday to using town property as rent collateral and submitting over $3,000 in falsified overtime hours.

Reynolds pleaded guilty in Isle of Wight Circuit Court to two misdemeanor embezzlement and larceny by false pretense charges, reduced from the original felony indictments.

IW finances may block chance for ball fields

The county’s financial situation may push Smithfield toward annexation and stop a baseball and softball complex from being built. County officials pointed to what they described as the county’s dire financial situation as the reason the Scott farm boundary line adjustment and a $200,000 ball field donation aren’t happening.
