WINDSOR — Threatened amphibians, a historic house and the watershed for Norfolk’s water supply are three issues that have arisen as VDOT surveys the area targeted for the Route 460 northern bypass around Windsor.

Isle of Wight is one of just five counties that are home to the barking treefrog, considered a threatened species by the state.

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries asked VDOT to look for the barking treefrog, as well as two threatened salamanders — the Mabee’s salamander and the eastern tiger salamander. ...(Subscribe!) 

 

Board missed seeing capital funds were cut

Some members of the Board of Supervisors learned last week that the budget they thought they had approved was not exactly what was approved.

Requested, but not funded, were capital project monies for fire and EMS apparatus replacements, as well as a fire and rescue facility analysis, at $1.1 million and $50,000, respectively.

“We simply didn’t pick up on it,” said Board Chairman Rex Alphin.

Planners to vote on 2040

The Isle of Wight Planning Commission was expected to make a recommendation Tuesday night concerning the controversial ISLE 2040 plan.

The plan now moves on the Isle of Wight Board of Supervisors and is scheduled to be presented July 16. From there, the Board has 90 days to act or send it back to the Planning Commission.

What’s Thanksgiving without turkey, and what’s a hearty breakfast without eggs? Isle of Wight County students may soon find out as turkey and egg prices soar due to the worst avian flu outbreak in U.S. history.

“I don’t know what we’re going to do for Thanksgiving,” said Schools Food Services Director Pearl Taylor.
