Pagan River Raft Race

Rafting on the Pagan

Cruisin' Compass quickly pulled ahead of Bubble Guppies and stayed there throughout the children's division of the 25th annual Pagan River Raft Race. The race lasted about four minutes. The six-person crew ranged in age from 10 to 14 and used an old canoe and PVC outriggers for their "raft." Bubble Guppies also had a young crew that sported a duck mascot.

ISLE 2040 now moves on to the Isle of Wight Board of Supervisors after receiving a positive recommendation June 23 from the Planning Commission.

Voting to deny the controversial plan were commissioners Ollie King, Brian Carroll and Rick Gillerlain. Commissioner William Saunders abstained from voting due to his employment with the town of Smithfield. ...(Subscribe!)

Isle of Wight County Planning and Zoning Director Beverly Walkup is looking into whether anything can be done about a resident who displayed a sign during a staff member’s presentation on ISLE 2040.

Walkup was reading the list of resident and commissioner concerns and the county’s answers to them at the June 23 Planning Commission meeting, someone in the audience was allegedly flipping a sign stating “Not True” and “Spin.”

Town budget holds the line on costs

The Smithfield Town Council recently approved a fiscal year 2016 budget that’s 14 percent lower than last year.

While the drop appears to be a measure of austerity, it mostly reflects the loss of one-time revenues for large-scale projects. The Town Council voted 7-0 to authorize the town’s $7.9 million budget.

Last year, the budget was $9.2 million.

The path from Smithfield to Nike Park took another step forward recently when the Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 for an exception to the Chesapeake Bay Protection Area Ordinance.

Newport District Supervisor Buzz Bailey cast the only dissenting vote.
