Ouch! County looking at 12-cent tax hike

Isle of Wight residents could face a 12-cent tax increase to cover a $7.9 million budget deficit for the upcoming fiscal year.

Isle of Wight County Administrator Anne Seward is proposing the increase, with 10 cents used to cover part of the county’s shortfall and two cents for the schools.

The remainder of the deficit — $3.2 million — will be made up by pulling from reserves to cover the water reservation fee associated with the Norfolk water deal.

The proposed tax increase follows an 8-cent hike last year to the real estate tax rate — from 65 to 73 cents. It’s also the highest proposed tax rate in the last 20 years — going beyond a peak of 77 cents in 2000. ...(Subscribe!)

 

Town Council weighing role to back museum

The Smithfield Town Council will consider whether to fund the Isle of Wight County Museum after staff determines how much it will cost.

Isle of Wight County administrator Anne Seward has proposed eliminating the county’s Historic Resources Division for fiscal 2015, which would leave the Museum with no staff to run it.

Smfd. Times staffers take several top writing awards

Smithfield Times News Editor Diana McFarland earned three first-place writing awards for business, governmental and public safety stories during the Virginia Press Association’s annual news and advertising competition.

Staff writer Abby Proch also earned a first place award for education writing, and Editor John Edwards earned a second place award for editorial writing.

The awards were given for competition with other non-daily newspapers of similar circulation. They were presented during the association’s annual news and advertising meeting held at the Short Pump Hilton this weekend. ...(Subscribe!)
