Rainfall wreaked havoc throughout Isle of Wight County over the weekend and into Tuesday.

Schools were canceled Tuesday and some people were not able to get to work due to impassable roads.

Rising water stranded as many as 20 drivers at the Raceway gas station on Carrollton Boulevard near the foot of the James River Bridge Tuesday morning, said Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department volunteer Albert Burckard.



Surry moves closer to broadband

Broadband is one step closer to coming to Surry County.

Rhonda Russell, director of planning for the county, updated the Surry County Board of Supervisors on its plans to build a tower for broadband access.

The Thursday meeting focused mostly on setting a fee structure for broadband. The county itself will own the equipment to bring broadband to customers.



Pipeline would have little impact on Isle of Wight

The proposed natural gas pipeline announced last week, which the governor said was a “game changer,” would have little impact on Isle of Wight County.

But it could mean new jobs down the road.

This is true even though the pipeline will miss Isle of Wight County entirely, passing through Southampton County on its way to Chesapeake.
