The Smithfield Town Council recently approved a fiscal year 2016 budget that’s 14 percent lower than last year.

While the drop appears to be a measure of austerity, it mostly reflects the loss of one-time revenues for large-scale projects. The Town Council voted 7-0 to authorize the town’s $7.9 million budget.

Last year, the budget was $9.2 million.
