The Smithfield Police Department is in the market for a new evidence storage area, and the former Isle of Wight Rescue Squad might be the place for it.
Smithfield Police Lt. Matt Rogers said that accreditation officials have urged the police department to tighten security of its evidence, which is currently kept in a 250 sq. ft. basement room under town hall on Institute Street.
The dank, dark room also lacks climate control and ventilation, said Rogers.
Recently, the Town Council unanimously voted to send a request for bids for architectural services to renovate the building.
