Free/reduced lunch numbers climb

More than half of the students at three of Isle of Wight County’s elementary schools are eligible for free and reduced lunches.

The portion of kids in Isle of Wight receiving free or reduced lunches has exploded in recent years.

Last school year, 37.3 percent of Isle of Wight students were eligible for the federal lunch program — up from 27.5 percent in 2006.

Isle of Wight County schools’ Food Services Director Pearl Taylor believes the recession and business closures fueled higher eligibility numbers.
