Doctors making house calls — a new twist on an old practice — as well as managed care, are two health care innovations supporting a trend toward keeping older people in their homes longer.

Riverside’s recent decision to eliminate its 50 Medicaid beds at its nursing home facility in Smithfield has left many in the community wondering what other options are available for low-income residents.

SURRY — Pete Greene wasn’t happy to be attending the Virginia Department of Transportation town hall meeting Thursday about the Route 460 project.

Ten years ago, he attended similar meetings, after learning the new highway would cut through his Mill Creek neighborhood west of Windsor.

Weekly winners will be printed in The Smithfield Times and entered into a year-end prize drawing in December. Photos are judged by The Smithfield Times news staff and local professional photographers. Judging criteria is based on exposure, lighting, composition and subject.
