IW budget confusing?

Some county residents have questioned the total budget amount presented in Isle of Wight’s public notice advertisement, as well as the difficulty in understanding the proposed fiscal 2016 budget document.

It appears that the local contribution to schools — $28.7 million — was counted twice in the public notice, pushing the total amount to $162 million.

Smithfield Supervisor Al Casteen also questioned the $162 million total after the budget public hearing last week.

Route 460

Rt. 460 contract canceled 

Virginia Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne Jr. announced last week that the state is canceling its contract with U.S. 460 Mobility Partners and will attempt to get taxpayer money back that was spent on a project that has yet to begin construction.

The Smithfield Times Editor and Publisher John Edwards won the Virginia Press Association’s top editorial honor — the D. Lathan Mims Award for Editorial Leadership in the Community.

This is the fifth time Edwards has won the Mims, having received it in 1998-99, 2002, 2007 and 2011.

Edwards received the award Saturday at the VPA’s annual banquet in Roanoke.

The Smithfield Times also took home numerous news writing and advertising awards.

The paper came in third overall in its category for advertising.
