Morris bill would tighten standard for boat searches

Del. Rick Morris, R-64th, has taken issue with the practice of some law enforcement agencies boarding recreational boats without probable cause that a crime has been committed.

Morris recently introduced House Bill 1298, which would require law enforcement officers to have probable cause, as well as consent of the owner, before stopping, boarding and inspecting non-commercial vessels for various reasons, such as checking on the condition and number of life jackets on board.

IW $ aimed at Blackwater

Recreation in Isle of Wight is a target for improvements beginning next year, according to the county’s draft capital improvement plan.

Funding is set aside next year for the Blackwater River Park ($100,000); an amphitheater at Heritage park ($200,000); and general park maintenance ($50,000).

The Blackwater River Park uses local matching funds, along with state, federal and private development of the 2,487 acres owned by Isle of Wight County. Possible improvements include campgrounds, canoe and kayak access, trails, a ropes course and more, according to the draft CIP.

Supers back their lawyers over legal ads

The Isle of Wight county attorney denied it was a “personal vendetta” that led to his decision to stop running legal notices in the county’s two local newspapers, but instead was a way to save money and gain flexibility.

However, comparable-sized legals in the Daily Press cost seven times more than those in The Smithfield Times, based on the two newspapers’ advertising rate cards.
