Millions for public safety

The Norfolk water contract continues to be a major county expense this year, but Isle of Wight has also significantly increased its spending on all aspects of public safety since 2008 and before the “great recession,” when economic activity here was at its height.
That trend includes fire and rescue, emergency services, the Sheriff’s Office, Animal Services and several new facilities, including the Young-Laine Courts Building, the new rescue squad building, the new Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department building and the new animal shelter.  . ...(Subscribe!)
 

County slow to meet with Smithfield

The town of Smithfield has spent months trying to set up the first intergovernmental meeting in nearly two years between its Town Council and the Isle of Wight Board of Supervisors, but so far, nothing has happened.
Communication between the two bodies has waned over the years, with the last regularly held meetings dating back to nearly 10 years ago.

The Center threw an Easter party that started with a performance of silly and spiritual Easter songs sung by the students of Smithfield Baptist Church Preschool. Rounded off the event was an egg hunt for more than 200 candy-filled eggs. About 20 kids rushed the front lawn of the center, finding all the eggs in a matter of minutes.
