Murder dismissal upheld

The Virginia Court of Appeals has upheld the dismissal of murder convictions against Ronald Taft Davis III for a 2008 fatal shooting in Surry.

A panel of Virginia’s Court of Appeals reversed the judgment of the trial court.

It dismissed the felony first degree and attempted murder indictments against Davis on the basis of “collateral estoppel,” or double jeopardy, on Feb. 25.

At the request of the Attorney General’s Office, the appeals court reheard the case “en banc,” or by the full, 11-judge court.

On Oct. 21, the full court decided to uphold the appeal.

More students are enrolling in public schools — and there is little room for them.

Isle of Wight County school officials say the county added 105 students from last year, according Sept. 30 enrollment data, which is submitted by the school division to the state department of education every year.

The division’s student population was 5,507; it’s now 5,612.
