Staff plan to trim appeals period rejected

An effort by Isle of Wight County staff to dramatically reduce the amount of time residents have to appeal a property reassessment was defeated 4-1 by the Board of Supervisors.

Currently, Isle of Wight residents have up to a year to make an appeal to the Board of Equalization. Staff wanted to reduce that to 60 days because it interfered with county budget planning.

School Board adopts $60.9 million budget

The Isle of Wight School Board will present a $60.9 million fiscal year 2016 budget to the Board of Supervisors.

The Board voted Monday night to approve the budget, 3-1, with Carrsville representative Robert Eley dissenting.

The proposed budget is down $650,000 from earlier proposals after the School Board attempted to give the Board of Supervisors, which requested a flat budget, something slimmer.

Property values unchanged

Isle of Wight property values remained flat since the last reassessment in 2012, according to the commissioner of revenue.

Residential and commercial property rose about 1 percent, multi-family went up about 3 percent, while agricultural land fell 8 percent resulting in no overall increase in value, said Isle of Wight Commissioner of Revenue Gerald Gwaltney Thursday at the Board of Supervisors meeting.
