A crowd sits and eats bacon while listening to Fat Ammons & The All-Stars at the Bacon, Bourbon and Beach Music Festival, held Saturday in Smithfield. All 2,500 tickets for the event were sold, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Luter YMCA, said Larry Saint, who serves on the Smithfield VA Events Committee.

Juliana Johnson peaked out from below her wide-brim hat and above the white tablecloth to rows of friends, family and more than two dozen of the 341 people she delivered as midwife.

They were here to celebrate her 100th birthday.

More than 200 people packed into the social hall at Mount Nebo Baptist Church in Surry to honor the centenarian on Saturday, who turned 100 a day later on Sept. 28.

Deadline for FDs today

Today is the deadline for two fire departments to sign a deal with the county.

How you feel about that deal depends on which side of the fence you’re on.

And yes, there is a fence.

Isle of Wight County has sparred with the Windsor and Carrollton fire departments over control of the facilities — with the possibility of the fire departments losing their funding.

The battle has raged in government meetings, in letters to The Smithfield Times, and most recently in a direct mailing to Carrollton residents.
