For some Dendron residents, the proposed coal-fired power plant is seen as a potential economic engine, for others it’s a dangerous health and environmental hazard.
In the words of Dendron resident Steven Koch, “Will ODEC provide a cemetery for Dendron? … y’all have an awful problem and y’all are going to die.”
Those in favor of the project have been less dramatic, choosing instead to show their support through signs and advertising.
The controversy also led to accusations of sign sabotage and a hate crime at a local church. Some even claim that support — or opposition — is divided along racial lines.
Taking a pro stand on the coal plant also appeared to help incumbent Del. William K. Barlow (D-64) defeat challenger Stan Clark, who campaigned against the plant.
Old Dominion Electric Cooperative plans to build a 750-megawatt base load power station on about 1,600 acres in the town of about 297 residents.
If built, the plant is expected to go online in 2017.
