Columbus C. “C.C.” Chapman

Columbus C. “C.C.” Chapman, 80, died Wednesday, Aug. 12 at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk. Mr. Chapman was born March 16, 1935 to the late Kenneth and Josephine Chapman of Carrollton. He received public education in Isle of Wight County and at an early age attended Macedonia AME Church in Carrollton. 

Mr. Chapman began working in the oyster industry until he was called into the military at age 21. He spent four years in the U.S. Army, and during that time, he courted and married his lovely wife, Mary L. Graves in 1960. They were married 55 years and had four children: Karen, Janet, Carl, and a stepdaughter, Freda.

After working as a welding supervisor at Newport News Shipbuilding for 38 years, he retired in 2000. He was an active member of Sixth Mt. Zion Baptist Temple.

A wake will be held Tuesday, Aug. 18, 3-6 p.m. at Macedonia AME Church in Carrollton. The home-going service is Wednesday, Aug. 19, 11 a.m. at Sixth Mt. Zion Baptist Temple, 3100 Butternut Drive in Hampton.
