David Chapman Hernly Sr., 73, of Smithfield passed away on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015 at home surrounded by his family.  He was predeceased in death by his parents, Charles H. and Stella L. Hernly.  

He had an illustrious business career beginning at the American Bank and Trust in Suffolk, 26 years with Shaw Systems along with NCARE, NDSI, Htech and MEDsys, building the last four from startup.

He is survived by his wife, Letty Gardner Hernly; two sons, Charles H. Hernly II and David C. Hernly Jr. and wife Alex; a sister, Susan Hernly Reed and husband, Mike; and grandchildren, Charles H. Hernly III, Elizabeth Hernly, Anderson Rippy IV and Tara McMillan.

Friends and family are invited to a celebration of life on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 7-9 p.m. at the Cedar Point Country Club, 8056 Clubhouse Drive, Suffolk.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Wesley Chapel UMC, P.O. Box 2266, Suffolk, VA 23432 or the IW Volunteer Rescue Squad, 13087 Great Springs Road, Smithfield, VA 2340.
