In last week’s paper, Mr. Lyons continued his seemingly limitless habit of offering opinions with no factual basis. Somehow, as he rode past her home and Googled her phone number, Mr. Lyons is now an expert on Georgette Phillips’ residency and her finances.

As someone who is in a position to know the facts, I would like to share them with you. You see, Georgette Phillips is my friend, my employer and, for over a year now, she has been my neighbor. I, like Georgette, am a resident of the Carisbooke community in Isle of Wight. She moved in two doors down from me last year. As ours is a close-knit community, I see her daily as she passes my house on her way to and from home, and on occasions I have carpooled with her. I have visited in her home. She is a member of our ladies’ group and attends our community events.

Again, because I know the facts, I know that she voted in Isle of Wight last November, her car is registered in Isle of Wight and, just like the rest of us, she pays personal property taxes in Isle of Wight. In short, she is a resident of Isle of Wight and has been for over a year.

As I recall, when Mrs. Stanton was running against Wayne Farmer, a lifelong resident of Isle of Wight, she kept pointing out that length of residency was irrelevant. Now, it is all she and her supporters want to talk about.

If there is concern about the time the candidate have spent in Isle of Wight County, I would simply offer this: Every weekday for the past 14 years, Mrs. Stanton has driven out of Isle of Wight County to defend criminals in Norfolk. Every weekday for that same period of time, Georgette Phillips has been right here in Isle of Wight County prosecuting them.
