Fitzhugh ”Hugh” L. Edwards

Fitzhugh ”Hugh” L. Edwards passed away Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015.  Born in Richmond, he was the son of the late Fitzhugh and Hattie Edwards.  He had been a Smithfield resident most of his life.  

Hugh leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Rebecca; children, Ellen Howard (Brian) of Chesapeake, Mary Hassell (Nathan) and David Edwards of Smithfield; five grandchildren, Joshua, Daniel, Hannah, Emma and Benjamin; a sister, Gloria Ray of Smithfield; and a host of nieces and nephews and extended family.

A graduate of Newport News High School, Hugh was also a graduate of Hemphill Diesel School in New York.  He entered the Merchant Marine and was employed by Esso and traveled to many foreign ports.  Hugh served as a military police in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.  After the service to his country, he returned to the family in Smithfield, Edwards’ Poultry Farm.

A graveside funeral service was held Jan. 4, in Historic St. Luke Cemetery with the Rev. O.H. Burton officiating.
