ELBERON — Alpha Conway Adkins, 95, of Elberon, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Feb. 16, 2016.
Born in Stuart on Feb. 21, 1920, she was the widow of the late John Abe “Jabe” Adkins and the daughter of the late Posey Lester Conway and Lucy Lena Rodgers Conway.
Mrs. Adkins was a member of Moore’s Swamp Baptist Church. She canned, preserved, froze, and pickled the bounty of vegetables she and Jabe grew. She was a hard worker who had a true servant’s heart; faithfully serving her family, making sure all of their needs were met. If you ever met Alpha, you would have loved her. Alpha survived a mastectomy and radiation at age 87, while helping to care for her bedridden husband. Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Lawrence W. Emory Jr.; step-granddaughters, Ella Wells, Ellen Siler and Angie Matranga; her brother, Paul Peyton Conway; and her sister, Virginia Frances Conway Turner.
Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Linda A. Emory and her husband, Lawrence of Elberon, and Vickie Sue Jones and her husband, Harold of Surry; two sons, W. Lee Adkins and his wife, Kathryn of Lynchburg, and Roger Lane Adkins and wife, Nora of Smithfield; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; numerous step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday, Feb. 19, 2016 6 – 8 p.m. at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, Wakefield Chapel and at other times at the family home. A funeral service will be held Saturday, Feb. 20, 2 p.m. at Moore’s Swamp Baptist Church in Elberon with the Rev. Danny R. Blalock officiating. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Surry Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 188, Surry, VA 23883. Condolences may be posted at www.rwbakerfh.com.
