Joyce Y. Mason passed away peacefully on July 4, 2016 at the age of 97. Joyce was born on Jan. 28, 1919 and was a native of Baltimore, Maryland, living her early years in Newport News and later settling in Frederick, Maryland.  She and her late husband, Jack Mason, raised their family in Frederick and returned to Newport News in 1992 to be closer to their children. 

Joyce started her career at Newport News Shipbuilding and finished as the secretary to the principal at Parkway Elementary School in Frederick.  She was a founding member of Mt. Carmel Church in Newport News and a member of the Newport News Woman’s Club.

She is survived by her four children, Alan, his wife Donna and his two children; Norman, his wife Betsy and their two children and Chris Mason; her sister, Leslie Cherry and her husband, Mike, along with many great grandchildren. 

The family will be forever grateful for the care provided by the special caregivers who took care of her while she remained at home in Newport News. Riverside Healthy Living Community in Smithfield became her home for the last three and a half years where she was taken care of by an amazing staff who made her smile shine bright every day.  “You are my Sunshine” will always have a special meaning for all who knew her. 

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, Va. 23606
