Charles Edwin Smith III, 83, of Smithfield, passed away on July 8, 2019 at his residence.  Mr. Smith was the son of the late Charles Edwin Smith Jr. and Sarah Margaret Smith.  He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Scofield Smith, six children, 14 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.   He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Mr. Smith proudly served in the U.S. Army, 82 Airborne Paratroopers.  He and Barbara moved to Smithfield nearly 27 years ago, where they enjoyed the country life and all of its surroundings.  Known as the “Banjo Man,” Mr. Smith was often seen playing on Main Street as well as at many other events around the county where he was joined by the band he played with and often by his wife, Barbara. He also sang at many events with The Gospel Country Messengers Quartet. He loved the outdoors and carried his dog most everywhere he went.  A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 14, 3 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, Smithfield.  The family will receive friends at a reception following the service at the church.
