The Town of Smithfield, Isle of Wight County and indeed the world recently lost a wonderful man of God. On April 6, the Rev./Dr. Jarvis M. Hearn claimed the promise of the resurrection. He was a good neighbor, friend and colleague.

Jarvis had just turned 90 years old in February. During those years he accomplished and experienced more than what people would call humanly possible. He was a true Renaissance man.

I think his greatest accomplishment was the way he allowed the light of Christ to shine forth from him. Today Jarvis’ light is still shining. Those who knew him carry in their hearts the light that flowed from him.

There is also a physical light that is still shining. Some years back Jarvis installed a light at the end of his sidewalk. This light looks like a candle that is flickering. When the sun goes down I can stand on my front porch and see Jarvis’ light. It is a wonderful reminder of how he brought light to the lives of so many people.
