Judy Winslow to return as tourism director

After a month-long hiatus, Judy Winslow will return next week as director of Smithfield and Isle of Wight County’s shared tourism department.

Winslow had resigned from the role effective June 24 after a roughly 30-year career with the department, the past 15 as its director. Her June 2 resignation letter said she’d accepted a new position as public relations manager for Firefly Fiber Broadband in Charlottesville — a move that would place her closer to her daughter and son-in-law in Louisa County.

“Although the company I joined here in the Charlottesville area, Firefly Fiber Broadband, is fantastic — both the people and their mission to bring fiber broadband to rural Central Virginia — I truly learned that my heart belongs to the world of tourism,” Winslow said in an email statement to The Smithfield Times confirming her return. “I am fortunate that the county had not yet replaced my position before making the decision to take a step back and complete my career in the industry and in the community that I love.”

“We are all excited to have her back,” said Assistant County Administrator Don Robertson. “Judy is an extremely important member of our team. She has distinguished herself as one of the top tourism directors in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and we are fortunate to have someone of her caliber serving as the lead cheerleader in promoting our community’s assets.”
