‘Souper Saturday’ to return Oct. 9

After a one-year hiatus, the Isle of Wight Christian Outreach Program’s “Souper Saturday” event will return to Trinity United Methodist Church on Oct. 9.

According to Cris Lawrence, the event’s coordinator, the formerly buffet-style, dine-in luncheon will be using a drive-through format this year, with two lanes of traffic. There will be no dine-in option due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

For a $5 donation, attendees will receive homemade soup, two ham biscuits, a homemade dessert and a bottle of water.

The proceeds will be donated to Isle of Wight County’s Department of Social Services toward its energy assistance program, which helps eligible households offset the expense of heating or cooling their homes.

Those who wish to donate soup or a dessert can drop them off from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 8 at the church or via the drive-through the day of the event from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Sales will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., during which time the Smithfield High School band will be performing in the church parking lot.

Those interested in donating soup or a dessert, or volunteering the day of the event, can make arrangements by calling Lawrence at 757-810-4165 or emailing cop@iowcop.net.
