Loretta Jane Newby left us to join her Heavenly Father on Oct. 23, 2021, at the age of 77. Loretta, or Jane as she was known by her family and friends, passed away at home surrounded by her loving children and grandchildren.

Born on Dec. 24, 1943, in Isle of Wight County, Carrollton, Jane attended Westside High School. She graduated as an honor student before settling in the District of Columbia. Jane continued her education at the University of Maryland where she received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and advanced her education in computer science while raising a family of 12 children.

Jane, never wanting to keep her feet on the ground, joined Avon as a young entrepreneur. As an “Avon Lady,” Jane was able to touch the hearts of many young women. You never felt like a customer but a cherished friend. Jane’s kindness glowed from the inside, and her gentle voice warmed the coldest heart.

Jane’s love of mathematics led her to become a public school teacher with the District of Columbia, where she taught at Luke C. Moore High School, formerly known as the D.C. Street Academy. Eager to share her remarkable gift in mathematics with the world, she earned the respect of her peers and was loved by her students.

While working at D.C. Public Schools, Jane worked in the clothing and accessories department at Macy’s. Never fearful of a challenge and with her fantastic sense of style, she served as a role model to the next generation on how a “lady” should dress. Jane worked tirelessly to bring out one’s inner beauty.

Jane was predeceased by her parents, Newton Asbery Chapman and Captoria L. Chapman, and her sister, Captoria C. Shannon. Jane is survived by her brother, Curtis A.
