Kenneth Nelson Johnson

Kenneth Nelson “Ken” Johnson, 80, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 2, 2022. He was born Dec. 3, 1941, in Gretna, and was the son of the late Nelson Silas Johnson and Ruth Farmer Johnson. Ken was a graduate of Gretna High School Class of 1960 and was a United States Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam era. He also attended Virginia Tech and enjoyed a long career in the construction industry, and was president/owner of Chesapeake Steel Inc. and president/co-owner of Chesapeake Bay Steel Inc. in Norfolk until his retirement in 2000. He was also a past president of the Virginia chapter of the American Subcontractors Association.

In 1996, Ken and his wife moved from Norfolk to Windsor, where they happily lived for 25 years. He served on Windsor’s Town Council and Planning Commission from 2002 to 2008. Ken will be remembered for many wonderful things, but especially his quick wit, his generosity, and his deep love for the Lord and his family.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, M. Dawn Rodgerson Johnson; sons, Timothy W. Johnson (Jennifer), Randy Johnson; grandchildren, Lauren, Tyler, Meagan and Conner; brothers, Aaron Johnson, Tommy Johnson (JoAnn) and Dennis Johnson (Sallie); and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, 2022, at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory with the Rev. Tim Rawls officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. Friends may join the family for a time of visitation prior to the service on Sunday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
