Surry seeks LOVE sign input

Surry’s tourism department is seeking the public’s help in choosing a design for the county’s LOVE sign.

The LOVEworks program is a statewide branding initiative intended to promote travel in Virginia and strengthen awareness of the state’s “Virginia is for Lovers” slogan — by placing giant LOVE letters in cities, counties and towns.

More than 250 LOVEworks signs are already in place across the state. In the town of Smithfield, home to the corporate headquarters of Smithfield Foods, the “V” in the town’s LOVE sign has been painted to look like bacon strips.

In the survey, which can be accessed at https://tinyurl.com/yz439wac, residents can choose a brick “L” or a heron on a log or a boot in place of the letter. For the “O,” residents have a choice of a tractor tire, an atom — to symbolize the Surry nuclear plant — or a life preserver. For the “V,” the options are to form the letter with two kayaks, a bird spreading its wings or two fish. For the “E,” residents have a choice of a stacked crab pot design, logs or an eagle with its wings stretched to form the letter.

The survey will be available from Jan. 12 through Feb. 28.
