IW schools close ahead of snow

All Isle of Wight County public schools and offices will be closed Friday, Jan. 21, in anticipation of the winter storm expected to enter the area mid-day.

The school division announced the closure just after 4 p.m. Thursday.

The National Weather Service’s Wakefield station has issued a winter weather advisory for Isle of Wight and Surry counties through 7 a.m. Friday, with mixed rain and snow possible.

Friday, a winter storm warning will take effect for Isle of Wight, with snow and ice accumulations between four and seven inches possible. Surry’s forecast calls for new snow accumulation of one to three inches.

Surry County Public Schools had already closed its buildings to students on Jan. 18 due to staffing shortages resulting from COVID-19 quarantines. The school system will hold virtual classes through Jan. 21, then reopen for hybrid instruction the week of Jan. 24-28.

Isle of Wight Academy has canceled its girls basketball games versus Denbigh Baptist scheduled for Thursday night due to the forecast, but has not announced any further schedule changes at this time.
