The Carrollton Ruritan Club has announced its scholarship recipients for 2022.

Four high school seniors will receive $1,000 for higher education expenses.

This year’s recipients are:

• Faith Wells, daughter of Andrea and Jeffrey Wells of Carrollton
• Austin Jackson, son of Krueger Jackson of Smithfield
• Neelie K. Harris, daughter of Korie Harris of Smithfield
• Emily Shelor, daughter of Olivia and Charles Shelor of Carrollton

Funds for the scholarships come from the Carrollton Ruritan Education Fund, an endowment within the National Ruritan Foundation, another endowed matching gift from this foundation, a scholarship fund of Healing Waters Worship Center and individual contributions from club members.

The selection process of the scholarship committee ranks applicants by their stated career goals, financial need, extracurricular activities, academic achievement, character and recommendations. Some preference is given for residents of the Carrollton area.

Wells intends to study forensics and biometrics. She participated in the summer science research program and math honor society, and is ranked No. 1 out of 323 seniors at Smithfield High School, with a GPA of 4.6

Jackson intends to study engineering. He’s ranked No. 4 out of 323 at SHS, with a GPA of 4.5. Outside of school, he’s involved in math tutoring, soccer and is an eagle scout and leader in Troop 36, sponsored by the Carrollton Ruritan Club.

Harris intends to study public relations and sports media and analytics at Virginia Tech. She’s ranked No. 37 out of 323 at SHS with a GPA of 4.2. She’s the class vice president and has served as student liaison for Smithfield High to the Isle of Wight County School Board for two years.

Shelor, a student band director, intends to study nursing and minor in business at James Madison University.
