Robert Earl Jones, age 87, of Ivor, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, July 23, 2022.

Mr. Jones was a native of Isle of Wight County.  Mr. Jones worked in the shipyard for Newport News Shipbuilding for 33 years from 1962 to 1995.  Outside of work and long after retirement, for many years he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, fishing in the James River, hunting on the family farm, raising various livestock and living off the land, camping, gardening, and visiting the Great Smoky Mountains.

Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his wife of more than 64 years, Sara Rachel Jones, his father, Robert H. Jones, his mother, Bertha L. Jones, and his sisters Lucille J. Crocker, Ivea J. Logan, Nancy J. Cook, and Bertha J. Beale.

Mr. Jones is survived by his brothers, Wayne Jones and Milway Jones (Janice), all of Ivor; sisters, Susie J. Poe of Richmond, Faye J. Drewery (Joe) of Elberon, Phyllis J. Bick (Frank) of Burwell’s Bay, and Jo J. Helmstetter of Onancock; two sons, Robert Theodore Jones of Ivor and David Earl Jones (Deborah) of Windsor, two daughters, Janet Leah Jones and Melissa Jones, both of Ivor; and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 AM on Thursday, July 28, 2022 in Mill Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, 6329 Mill Swamp Rd, Ivor, VA 23866, with the Rev. Billy Gardner officiating.  The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Company Funeral Home and Crematory, Wakefield Chapel on Wednesday, July 27, 2022 from 6 to 7 PM.
