Sundays at Four to herald the season with Nov. 27 concert

A return engagement by the 2nd Ending Brass and organist Heidi Bloch will continue Smithfield’s holiday festivities at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, at Christ Episcopal Church.

“The combination of five brass instruments (two trumpets, trombone, French horn and tuba) plus organ can’t help but lift the spirit and put all into a ‘December’ holidays frame of mind,” said organizer Mary Cole. “With familiar carols in new arrangements, the perennial carol sing with expected audience participation, a medley of Chanukah folk tunes and some interesting organ solos featuring unusual harmonies and rhythms to brighten the tried and true carols, this concert is sure to bring a smile to all who attend.”

A new piece this year was written by Doug Minerd, known as a composer and producer of dozens of shows and events for various American outdoor attractions and theme parks. His piece is a medley of familiar carols, some in the style of traditional classical composers.

This is a Sundays at Four “ticketed” concert —  adults $20 and students $5. Children under 12 will be admitted free. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Season ticket owners should bring tickets they’ve already received.

“Smithfield’s classical concert series has been affected as all presenting organizations have by COVID, diminished audience size, loss of volunteer leadership, as well as increasing costs to do business,” Cole said. “If we want this organization and its always interesting array of local and mostly Virginia talent to continue bringing fine entertainment to us, we must, as a community, commit to supporting the organization with our presence, our ticket purchases, and our contributions. It would certainly be a sad thing to learn that this organization, after 14 years, like too many others, has had to ‘fold’ its doors due to lack of funds to continue. Make this holiday concert the beginning of your family tradition for this 2022 holiday season.”

Christ Episcopal Church is located at Church and Main streets in downtown Smithfield. For more information, call or write Cole at 757-675-577, marycole@tidewaterarts.com or P.O. Box 61, Smithfield, VA 23431.
