IWCS culinary arts students prepare Thanksgiving meals for families in need

Isle of Wight County Schools culinary arts students recently prepared 103 Thanksgiving meals for families in need.
Each meal box included sliced ham and turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potato casserole, collard greens, green beans with bacon, stuffing, sweet potato biscuits, and apple and pecan pies, all prepared by the students under the instruction of IWCS chefs Scott Horne and Nic Hagen. Each meal box is intended to feed eight to 10 people.
Boxes were distributed at Smithfield and Windsor high schools from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 22, and home deliveries are being provided for those unable to make the delivery times.
Families who qualify as “homeless” under the McKinney-Vento Act, a federal law that provides for families and children experiencing homelessness or living in temporary accommodations. The remaining boxes went to families and employees at all nine Isle of Wight schools based on need, such as financial hardship, severe illness or handicap. Families had to indicate they wanted to receive a box and confirm a pickup or delivery time.
