Smithfield kicked off the Christmas season with its annual tree-lighting ceremony on Nov. 18, followed by its Mistletoe Market on Main Street Nov. 19. Jim and Elaine Abicht, owners of The Christmas Store on Main Street, served as this year’s tree-lighters. The tree-lighting ceremony also featured performances by Trinity United Methodist Church’s preschool choir and Smithfield High School’s jazz band. The Mistletoe Market, held from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday, included performances by Smithfield High School’s chorus, Southside Ballet and Footnotes School of Dance at the Smithfield Times gazebo stage, acoustic guitarist Mark Calhoun at the 1750 Isle of Wight Courthouse and a visit from Santa Claus at the porch at Laura & Lucy’s.
