The Smithfield Farmers Market’s opening day has been pushed back one week to April 8 due to forecasted high winds and rain this weekend.

Isle of Wight and Surry counties should be spared the brunt of a Midwest storm system as it moves east, but could see some impacts tonight and tomorrow, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS’ Wakefield station has issued a wind advisory for Hampton Roads from 8 a.m. Saturday to midnight on Sunday.

According to the NWS, a deepening low-pressure system is forecast to push northeast from the central plains on Friday and enter the Great Lakes region by tonight. A strong cold front attached to this system will clash with warm and humid air surging into the lower to mid-Mississippi Valley, sparking numerous thunderstorms from the Midwest to eastern Texas. These storms are forecast to swing eastward through the Ohio and Tennessee valleys before weakening early Saturday across the mid-Atlantic and southeast.

Tonight, Hampton Roads will see a roughly 40% chance of rain before 2 a.m. and winds 11 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph.

On Saturday, winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts of 40 to 50 mph possible Saturday afternoon and into the evening. Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects and tree limbs may be downed, possibly resulting in power outages. There’s a 70% chance of rainfall, with a possible thunderstorm before 2 p.m.

High temperatures for the region are forecast to stay in the mid-70s tonight and tomorrow. By Sunday, winds should die down to between 10 to 15 mph, but the high for the day will drop to 60ºF.
