Letter – Trust  teachers

It was brought to my attention that I made a factual error in my April 19 letter (“Censorship is troubling”) about the specific wording of the Isle of Wight County School Board’s INB policy.

I apologize for that. I was going off memory on the wording of the policy and made a mistake. The policy doesn’t actually define “divisive” content.

My concern remains, however, that the schools don’t need to be politicized. I believe we can trust our county teachers to continue making good-faith efforts to provide fact-based lessons to students.  I’m also willing to extend my trust to the School Board that it will not make unfair decisions based on the INB policy. It would ease the concerns of many of us local parents if the board members will provide a specific list of the school lesson plans that they are concerned about and let these issues be discussed openly prior to any School Board decisions to remove material.
