Letter – Brewer’s ads are ‘unhinged’

Editor, The Smithfield Times:

What’s with the positively unhinged “Stands with Trump” campaign flyers Emily Brewer is mailing and texting?

According to Brewer, Hermie Sadler (“Louise’s co-pilot”) “stands with Louise Lucas and radical Democrats” because he once said something complimentary about Senator Lucas and “was with her (Hillary Clinton)” because he opposed Trump in 2016 and 2020. In one flyer, she pastes Lucas with fake claims of  “destroying the 2nd Amendment” and supporting “born alive abortions.” In another, she says she will “take down the woke Democrats in control of the Senate, and help make Virginia the best place to live, work, and raise a family.”

There are plenty of us who believe the Democrat-controlled Senate is a bulwark in preventing  our wolf-in-sheep’s-clothing governor and his merry band of misogynists from shoving us back into the 1950s, public sentiment be damned.

Oh, and she’ll defend free speech to “protect our Constitutional rights, so bureaucrats can’t stifle our voices”? How about protecting our constitutional rights against loud conservatives who want to stifle others’ rights to free speech and freedom of assembly, who want to censor books and restrict teaching topics that they don’t like? If Brewer wins, is she going to defend free speech for everyone or only that of her conservative supporters?

The final straw for me was her flyer that I received by text touting her endorsement from Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears, with both women holding long guns to demonstrate their NRA-supported bonafides. At a time when gun deaths (murders, suicides, accidental shootings) are now the leading cause of death for children and teens ages 5-18 — let that sink in for a moment — I cannot believe she thought this tone-deaf campaign appeal was acceptable. Shame!
