Barbara Ruth Bell Hux, of Poquoson, passed away peacefully at age 85 on Monday, July 3, 2023. She was born to long lines of farming families in Surry County, Virginia. She graduated from Surry High School in June of 1956 and married the love of her life, David Berryman Hux, one month later. Together they continued the farming tradition for the first few years of their marriage. Afterwards, she was employed in several positions but was most proud of her work as the secretary at Surry County Academy. She and David moved their family to Poquoson in 1976 to be closer to his work at Newport News Shipbuilding. She worked in various capacities for York County Public Schools and retired from Tabb High School, as secretary and bookkeeper, in 1997.
Among the happiest events in her life was when she became the beloved “Nana” to her two granddaughters, whom she cherished. She was a prominent and ever-present figure in their lives.
Barbara was active in the Methodist and Baptist Churches throughout her life and belonged to Emmaus Baptist Church in Poquoson where she particularly loved her Sunday School class. She served in various roles within the church including children’s Sunday School teacher, choir member, nursery worker and helped with Vacation Bible School.
Barbara was predeceased by her husband, David Berryman Hux on June 9th, 2023; her parents, Jesse and Margaret Jones Bell; her brother Hudson L. Bell, Sr. and his wife, Marie; and her sister Jessie Barham Bell Carroll. She is survived by her two sons, David and his wife Teresa Evans Hux of Poquoson, Donald of Harrisonburg and granddaughters, Stephanie and Melanie of Poquoson, brother-in-law Jimmy Carroll and his wife, Jeannine of Smithfield and brother-in-law Ollie Hux and his wife Ellie of Broomfield, Colorado as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins who were dear to her heart. Also, Barbara and David were blessed to have a multitude of very dear neighbors and friends that are considered part of their extended family. The Hux family will be forever grateful for the loving kindness and friendship shown to our parents.
Barbara’s sons, David and Donald, would like to share with everyone the love, respect and admiration we have for our mother and express our greatest appreciation for the Christian example she set for us.
The Hux family would like to recognize and extend our heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff at the Mennowood Retirement Community and Riverside Regional Medical Center for the outstanding care and kindness shown to Barbara and our family.
