Letter – Ruritan member loves the Times

Editor, The Smithfield Times:

What a pleasure to open the paper and read such a feel-good story! The “Isle of Wight Ruritans Celebrate 75 Years” article on Oct. 18 brought smiles to my face and pep to my step.

I am a proud Ruritan member, and I am also a proud Smithfield resident. These are crazy times, often with the media focusing on what is wrong in this world. How lucky are we that we have such a dedicated small-town paper that does not shy away from contentious issues AND balances what is good in this world.

I greatly appreciate being able to open the paper to become more informed AND have the potential to see our friends and neighbors celebrate their school/sport successes, their loved ones’ lives, and everyday life. It adds to my feeling of being part of and invested in this community.

I grew up in a small town with a similar type of paper, and I still treasure the clippings of having loved ones mentioned in Girl Scout troop events and swim meet scores. A local newspaper truly helps contribute to comradery and pride. We could drive 30 minutes to Virginia Beach and not be as blessed. Good luck seeing your kid in a Halloween costume ever hit that paper.

The Smithfield Times’ reporter came to the Ruritan event, was truly interested in capturing the essence of the club and its contribution to the community, and wrote such a kind tribute article.  Thank you for being a light in this world.
