Sirens blared down Main Street the morning of May 10 as the Virginia division of Law Enforcement United, a nonprofit dedicated to honoring police officers who have died in the line of duty and their surviving relatives, rolled through downtown Smithfield on bicycles and motorcycles. The annual three-day, 250-plus-mile ride that began in Chesapeake will culminate on May 12 in Washington, D.C., where the Chesapeake group and another from Roanoke will converge with riders from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland.
