Smithfield DMV to open June 10

Smithfield’s long-awaited new Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles office will open its doors on June 10.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for June 28 at 11 a.m., the DMV stated in a June 6 news release.
The new 4,800-square-foot DMV is located on South Church Street between Dollar General and True Value Hardware.
Smithfield’s old DMV building, which now houses Office Express Plus, shuttered in 2020 along with every other DMV in the state during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, and stayed closed even when others reopened in 2021 – according to the DMV, due to its small lobby and lack of a public restroom.
The new center broke ground in April 2023. Warren Sachs, whose KLS Battery Park Development Group LLC owns the land, will lease the building to the DMV under a 10-year contract.
According to the DMV news release, the new center is more than twice the square footage of the old office and has seven service windows, up from four in its former location. The office will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.
