Editor, The Smithfield Times:
I am writing in support of Smithfield Town Council candidates Mary Ellen Bebermeyer, Darren Cutler, Bill Harris and Mike Smith.
They understand that council members need to listen to citizens’ concerns about the rapid development that is taking place in our town. I understand the importance of growth, but it seems the current council is welcoming development with no regard for the impact it will have on existing infrastructure. We will be playing “catch up” in order to meet the additional demands of uncontrolled growth.
Furthermore, the proffers by some developers is totally inadequate to offset the cost to the town of such development. I agree with Bill Harris that public funds should not be used to support any private development or enterprise. Taxpayer dollars should be used to enhance the quality of life for the citizens, not to help developers increase their profits.
I encourage voters to vote for Mary Ann Bebermeyer, Darren Cutler, Bill Harris and Mike Smith, who understand the importance of listening to citizens, managing growth that improves the town, not using public money for private development and planning ahead to ensure we have the infrastructure (roads, schools, police, fire and rescue) to support inevitable growth.
