Letter – Enjoyed Q&A on transparency

Editor, The Smithfield Times:

I’d like to take a few moments to thank The Smithfield Times for your series of questions to the six Town Council candidates. I have found their responses informative and encouraging. Further kudos to Smithfield’s Citizens For Responsible Leadership for sharing and amplifying the candidates’ responses.

The question I found most compelling to date is what the council can do to further improve transparency. The responses from Mary Ellen Bebermeyer, Mike Smith, Bill Harris and Darren Cutler all echo a common sentiment of the citizens: There needs to be a mechanism for conversation between council members and citizens in a less formal setting. Perhaps a Town Hall-type setting where questions can be posed and council members can respond? They could share explanations and reasons behind some of the tough decisions they are faced with. Perhaps a table at the Farmers Market where we can chat with council members?

The formal nature of council meetings and the citizen comment periods don’t foster discussion. I know I would appreciate the improved access and opportunity to interact. We all love this town and want the best for all citizens — and improving trust in our council members with clear communication will make a real difference.
