Editor, The Smithfield Times:
Thank you for printing Town Council candidate responses to important questions for our town.
The question/response printed Sept. 11 regarding the Park-to-Park bike and pedestrian trail showed a variety of thoughtful comments from the candidates. I agree with several remarks, especially that the trail extension is not a priority currently. However, it may become a priority in the next couple of years, if the best way to get downtown from the already busy two-lane Battery Park Road is via bike and walking because of additional vehicle congestion related to new approved developments.
I hope to hear more discussion in and outside of the Town Council on this and other topics that concern the town and residents’ well-being.
I believe the addition of Town Council candidates endorsed by the Citizens for Responsible Leadership in Smithfield — Mary Ellen Bebermeyer, William Harris, Darren Cutler and Mike Smith — will function as a leavening agent to help the Town Council rise to its potential in collaborating with their constituents for the betterment of Smithfield.
