Letter – Honor ‘Historic Smithfield’ vision

Editor, The Smithfield Times:

For about 55 years, citizens of Smithfield focused on “preserving and protecting the Town’s rich architectural and cultural heritage which positively impacts tourism and contributes to the overall well-being of the community.” This is quoted from the front of the Comprehensive Plan and is an ongoing expectation.

Not many years ago, a huge revitalization project for the Town of Smithfield was carried out, and much time and money were given to seriously plan, work, preserve, restore and add brick sidewalks and streets to bring out the historic flavor of Smithfield, securing the title “Historic Smithfield.”

Tourism became an important word to assist bringing in others from outside to “Historic Smithfield.” History had become a strong means of Smithfield’s survival and a tourism draw. Long before this, our newspaper, The Smithfield Times, had been recording the daily happenings and providing information to its citizens for almost a century.

Anne and John Edwards, owners of the Times in more recent years, lovingly created and provided “Times Square” for use as a family gathering place that all ages could enjoy. John was on the IWAL board and initiated concerts in this space that have been attended by hundreds each week during the summer. There can be no doubt that sponsoring the Downtown Smithfield Summer Concert Series on this little plot of land, and the use of the Times building, was a gift to our community from John and Anne. One intended to keep on giving.

It seems appropriate and right that this award-winning paper, at a time when many towns are losing their newspapers, should remain preserved in our history. It is a museum in itself. It could be a wonderful tourism offering as a stop to learn about our town’s history through its 100 years of papers, pictures and media.

Steve Stewart has taken our town history seriously. He has honored the publishing of this area’s paper and awards continue to be won. This outdoor family space with easy wheelchair and walker access, and a safe area for little children, is definitely a family place. Steve will see that it remains so.

Mr. Stewart offered to purchase the property in 2023, and restated the offer in February 2024. I recommend the town sell the property to Mr. Stewart in its entirety, preserving the Times in its original and historical location, allowing him to manage the paper and Times Square for the community.
