Packers get first-round bye in football playoffs

Smithfield High School’s football team rolled into the regional playoffs with a 49-14 road win over Tabb on Nov. 8.

The Packers, 8-2, secured the second seed and a first-round bye in the Class 4 Region A playoffs. On Nov. 22, SHS will host the winner of this week’s Hampton-Denbigh first-round game. 

Tabb, a Bay Rivers District opponent, finished the regular season 4-6 and will travel to meet Hopewell, 5-5, in the first round of the Class 3 Region A playoffs on Nov. 15.

Smithfield finished third in the Bay Rivers standings behind unbeaten Lafayette and 9-1 Poquoson.

Surry County High earned a berth in the Class 1 Region B playoffs despite a 36-28 loss to rival Sussex Central on Nov. 9.

That means the fifth-seeded Cougars, who finished the regular season with a 3-7 record, get another crack at Sussex, again on the road. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Nov. 15. Sussex, 5-5, is seeded fourth in the region playoffs.
