When Smithfield Police identified Anthony Lamont Haywood as the suspect in a Feb. 8 shooting at Woods Edge Apartments, it wasn’t the first time the name had come up on their radar.
The 42-year-old Hampton man accused of critically wounding a Woods Edge resident remains at large. Police have received no update on the victim’s condition.
Haywood, according to court records, served time in connection with his guilty plea 11 years earlier to two felony charges stemming from another non-fatal 2013 shooting at the adjacent Jersey Park Apartments complex that shares an access road with Woods Edge.
The Smithfield Times reported in 2014 that Haywood pleaded guilty that year to malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony after police named him, Quandrell Williams and a third unknown gunman as suspects in a 2013 shooting spree that police said left 18 shell casings and four bullets from at least two different firearms at the scene. The Times reported a victim had told police he’d been leaving a party in the early morning when three people began shooting at him, resulting in bullets going through his car’s rear and front passenger windows but missing him. A bullet also entered the living room of an apartment where two children were sleeping, but neither was harmed.
According to court records, Haywood was sentenced to three years in prison, followed by 10 years of probation to begin immediately upon his 2017 release, which suggests he was still on probation at the time of the Feb. 8 shooting. Per the terms of his 2014 plea, two additional felony charges of possessing a firearm by a convicted felon and maliciously shooting into an occupied dwelling weren’t prosecuted.
Williams, who pleaded guilty to the same two charges, received the same sentence.
Haywood is wanted in connection with the Feb. 8 shooting on charges of attempted murder, assault, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a violent felon, maliciously shooting into an occupied building, and shooting within 1,000 feet of a school. Woods Edge and Jersey Park are each located less than 1,000 feet from Westside Elementary School on the opposite side of West Main Street.
The Feb. 8 shooting on the Woods Edge side of Wrenn Road was the second gunfire incident this year at the two adjacent housing complexes. Smithfield Police announced on Feb. 12 they’d obtained warrants for 25-year-old Tresean McSweeney of Newport News in connection with a drive-by shooting that occurred on Jan. 4 on the Jersey Park side. McSweeney, who also remains at large, is charged with maliciously shooting into an occupied building, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, shooting from a vehicle, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession with intent to sell marijuana, carrying a concealed weapon – third offense, and possession of schedule I or II drugs.
Jersey Park has seen multiple shootings over the past two years. Salisbury, Maryland-based Green Street Housing expects to close on the purchase of Jersey Park and Woods Edge this spring. The company has pledged to beef up security at the two complexes as part of its planned renovations over the next two years.
