Isle of Wight County’s Board of Supervisors and School Board each canceled Feb. 20 meetings ahead of the heavy snow expected Wednesday and Thursday.

Isle of Wight County Schools Superintendent Theo Cramer had been scheduled to present his draft 2025-26 budget to the School Board that date, which will now be moved to Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. at the Westside Elementary auditorium.

The supervisors had planned on Feb. 20 to announce their candidates to fill the late William McCarty’s District 2 seat on the board. According to a public notice published Feb. 18, Board Chairman Don Rosie has called an emergency meeting on Feb. 25 for that sole purpose. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the second-floor boardroom of the county government complex at Monument Circle.

State law allows a 45-day window, in this case until March 11, for the board to appoint an interim representative to fill McCarty’s seat until a special election on Nov. 4 determines who will fill the vacancy for the remainder of McCarty’s term. McCarty died unexpectedly on Jan. 25 just over a year into his third four-year term in office.

State law requires the board announce its nominee or nominees in a public meeting at least seven days prior to voting on the appointment, but does not have to hold a public hearing on the matter. Board members have the option of nominating someone themselves or soliciting applications, provided the person appointed is a registered voter who resides within District 2.

The appointee would have the option, but not be required, to run in November for the full two-year remainder of McCarty’s term. He or she would have until June 20 to file paperwork to get on the November ballot.

According to County Attorney Bobby Jones, per the board’s bylaws all other agenda items scheduled for the Feb. 20 meeting will be carried over to next month’s regular meeting on March 20.
